Benefits of IPL hair removal at The Calla Clinic

Benefits of IPL hair removal at The Calla Clinic
There are several reasons you may benefit from IPL hair removal, including:

  • Long-Lasting Results: IPL offers a more permanent solution compared to traditional hair
removal methods like shaving or waxing, significantly reducing hair growth over time.
  • Safe: The technology targets hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin, reducing
    the risk of side effects.
  • Reduced Ingrown Hairs: shaving and waxing can lead to ingrown hairs, which can be
bothersome. IPL helps to prevent them by targeting the hair follicle directly meaning it cannot
    become ‘in-grown’.
  • Time Efficiency: IPL treatments can cover large areas quickly, and significantly reduce the
need to use alternative hair removal methods in the long-term. Say goodbye to those daily
    shaving or frequent waxing sessions!
  • Smooth Skin: Many people seek IPL for the added benefit of smoother skin, as the treatment
can improve skin texture while reducing hair. This is because IPL stimulates collagen
production- an added bonus to long-term hair removal!
  • Comfortable: IPL hair removal is a well-tolerated treatment with mild discomfort.

FAQs

IPL hair removal is a very effective treatment for long-term hair reduction for a range of skin and
hair types. However, the treatment is not suitable in the following hair & skin types:

Blonde, red or grey hair – if the hair to be removed is too fair or has no pigment the hair follicle will not absorb enough light, and the treatment will be ineffective.
Darker skin tones – depending on your skin tone and heritage IPL may not be suitable as it can cause skin burns due to the higher levels of melanin pigment in your skin.
Hair thickness – very fine hair is less effectively removed than coarse or thicker hair.

If you are unsure as to whether IPL hair removal would be an effective option for you, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic and our helpful, experienced team can answer your questions.

The number of treatments required will depend on your hair type, skin type and area being treated. Typically, we recommend a course of 6 treatments, but some areas may need up to 12 sessions. The expected number of treatments for your hair reduction will be discussed with you during your consultation to give you a more accurate estimate of the expected treatment course
for your hair.

IPL hair removal provides long-term reduction in hair growth but cannot guarantee permanent hair removal. There are no treatments that offer ‘permanent’ hair removal- despite this, these are often claims falsely advertised by brands and clinics. Here is the reason why…

IPL targets your hair follicle during the ‘active’ phase of growth. During this time there will be lots of hair follicles that are in other phases of inactive growth, and these will not absorb the light energy. This means that each treatment session only targets a proportion of hair follicles as it can only effectively damage the follicles in the ‘active phase’. To ensure optimal hair reduction
several treatment sessions spaced at 4–6-week intervals ensures that hair follicles at different growth phases are targeted. Despite this, there may still be a small number of hair follicles that were not in active phase during a treatment and over several years they can re-grow. To combat this, we recommend occasional maintenance sessions to keep long-term hair reduction at bay.

IPL hair removal generally feels like a mild snapping sensation or a rubber band flicking against the skin. Some individuals may describe it as a warm sensation, similar to a gentle heat or slight prickling. The treatment is very well tolerated. The skin is gently cooled during the procedure to removal residual heat.

You can start your IPL hair removal journey at any time of the year. However, to achieve results, you must ensure you commit to the treatment sessions at regular 4-6 intervals, otherwise you may require more treatments. It is advisable to consider upcoming plans such as holidays abroad where you may have significant sun exposure on the treatment site. IPL hair removal cannot be performed on tanned skin due to the increased risk of burns. In this scenario we would need to post-pone your treatment until your tan has faded- typically 4-6 weeks.

We always select the highest quality, most effective equipment to deliver the best results for our patients. We use the Lynton Excelight device for our IPL hair removal. Lynton Lasers are a UK medical laser manufacturer who are also used by the NHS, meaning they are required to have robust clinical data, evidence base and safety standards- for this reason we carefully selected this device to offer treatments to our patients at The Calla Clinic.
