New Year Skin Resolutions
With 2020 hurtling towards us at break-neck speed, I’m starting to think about the new year – another 12 months of helping my patients feel more comfortable and beautiful in their own unique skin. As a result, I’ve put together these 5 simple skincare resolutions for the brand new year:
Stop comparing yourself to others
It’s incredibly easy to turn on the television, open a magazine or scroll through social media and find men or women with perfect skin, lips, hair, teeth, etc. But we aren’t supposed to be a world full of lookalikes. It’s our uniqueness that makes us special, and yes, we can enhance what we’ve got – our natural and beautiful facial characteristics – but we can’t replace them! The tiny, beautiful differences in your smile, your eyes and in your facial expressions is what makes you uniquely you. I’m here to help you love the skin you are in, and I’m happy to help, but only when it is safe and appropriate for you!
Sugar isn’t always your friend
I know! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but excess sugar breaks down collagen in the body and ultimately accelerates the ageing process. Too much sugar can also aggravate skin conditions like eczema, so reducing your intake of the sweet stuff can have a positive impact on the texture and condition of your skin.
Water, on the other hand, is your friend
When you are dehydrated, your skin loses some of its elasticity. If you pinch your skin together between your fingers, dehydrated skin takes longer to return to normal than adequately hydrated skin, and this can exaggerate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Making sure that you are adequately hydrated can help to prevent this.
Treat your skin with the same level of care and importance as your other organs!
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and yet a great number of people are still opting for ‘bargain basement’ priced non-surgical treatments from inadequately qualified and inexperienced clinicians. Please, please, please, for the sake of your skin, please visit an experienced and medically qualified clinician for advice if you are considering a non-surgical aesthetic treatment, as they will be able to review your medical history and determine whether a treatment is safe for you and, in the highly unlikely event that something does go wrong, you can rest assured that you are in safe and medically experienced hands.
Jump on board the SPF train!
We all know by now that overexposure to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can cause premature skin ageing, as well as increase our risk of skin cancer. But the sun’s rays aren’t just a problem in the height of summer, they are a problem all year round that can simply and effectively be tackled by building skincare products with SPF into your daily regime. Trust me, your skin will thank you for it!
